Once again, the Maryland Terrapins football program faces another mediocre season. Since 1917, the University of Maryland has had 22 head football coaches. Of the 22 coaches, only 4 have left the program having a winning record. Curley Byrd 1917-1934, Jerry Claiborne 1972-1981, Ralph Friedgent 2001-2010 and Jim Tatum 1947-1955. The remaining 18 coaches had losing records. But for some reason, some call Locksley a "DEI" hire ...a political hire, calling him a "MEAC" coach, (why the MEAC, as opposed to the BIG SOUTH)... as if he is the first coach at Maryland to have an underperforming program.
Since Locksley is the only black head coach in the history of the program (he most certainly has to be a DEI hire) What then do we label the other 17? With that many under achieving coaches, decade after decade, what could the problem be? Social experiment hires? I think not. Maryland is a basketball school, with lacrosse a close second. The larger question is, how do you change the culture at Maryland as it relates to supporting a viable football program?
