Maryland women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese has been adding transfers and 2021 recruits right and left, and July 17 the longtime head woman added her first class of 2022 recruit. Touted wing Mila Reynolds (Washington/South Bend, Ind.) chose the Terps over offers from Michigan, Illinois, Xavier, Purdue, Missouri, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Pitt and others.

“There were some schools that were recruiting me really well and really hard. And at first I really did want to stay close to home here [in Indiana],” said Reynolds, a four-star recruit per ESPN. “But as I grew older and matured, I was OK with venturing out. I saw what Maryland had to offer and they just came out on top for me. I’m excited to be a Terp.”

The 6-foot-2 Reynolds earned a Maryland offer back in May. Since then, she’s been in regular contact with Frese and each of her assistants. Reynolds said no other school put that much effort into recruiting her this early in the process.

“Off the bat our relationship was really tight,” Reynolds said. “We formed a bond right away and the coaches at Maryland were just so nice and welcoming. I took it to heart what they said and I knew that’s where I wanted to be. Having that tight bond right away, it was a huge thing. I just loved everyone so much there.”

So much that she committed without ever having visited College Park, Md., in person. Reynolds admitted she’s never been on the East Coast, but is looking forward to seeing her future home as soon as travel restrictions are lifted.

“I did some virtual things, so I have an idea of what it’s like there. But, honestly, it’s really about the people and I love the people at Maryland,” Reynolds said. “The way they talked to me and recruited me, I knew I wanted to be there without even seeing the place. I love Coach Frese so much and her passion and intensity. That really stayed with me.”

Naturally, Reynolds is well aware of the program’s success. She said she’s seen Maryland play multiple times on TV and has been impressed with their track record.

“Maryland is a top program in the Big Ten and every year they have a chance to win a championship,” Reynolds said. “The chance to be apart of a program like that? I couldn’t turn it down.”

Reynolds is coming off a season where she averaged almost 20 points per game. She is considered one of the best in Washington High history and ranks among the all-time leaders in points with 947. Reynolds also stars for Michigan Crossover on the EYBL.

“I would say one word to describe me is versatile. I have a very versatile game and can score at all three levels, and defend from the post to the perimeter,” Reynolds said “I believe I shoot the ball well, I rebound rebound well, and I’m a facilitator. I like to get my teammates involved. In a lot of ways I’d say I'm a guard in a post player’s body. But I think all-around I bring a lot to the table and can bring a lot to a team.”

Reynolds is coached by her father, Steven, who heads the Washington program. Her younger sister, Amiyah, is a class of 2023 point guard, and her other sister, Kira, is a 2025 prospect.

“My dad and I are really close and we have a great relationship,” Reynolds said. “We butt heads at times, but it’s always great with us. We’ll go back and watch film and talk everything through and then we’re good. And playing with my younger sister, that’s been so fun. Last year was the first year I played with her and it was great. She’s the point guard, so she’s kind of the boss out there, but it’s a different story at home (laughs(). But it’s been great. I’m looking forward to this coming year and what we can do.”

Reynolds is also a starting pitcher on her school’s softball team. She said she likes to draw and is interested in photography as well.

“But mainly I’m just in the gym,” Reynolds said. “I’m trying to get better every day and live up to my potential.”
