Cox, Manning Promoted, Other Staff Changes

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Entering the 2023-24 season, Maryland basketball head coach Kevin Willard has announced three staff promotions. David Cox will now serve as the associate head coach, Greg Manning has been elevated to assistant coach, and Charlie Butler will take over the role of Director of Basketball Operations.

“David has been phenomenal to work with and is a tireless recruiter,” said Willard. “His perspective and insight help us get better every day. To have someone with his experience is terrific for the development of our players as well as our staff.”

Cox joined the program last year as an assistant coach after a four-year stint as head coach at Rhode Island (2018-22). Before that, he was an associate head coach with the Rams (2014-18) and at Rutgers (2010-14), an assistant coach at Georgetown (2007-10), and the director of operations at Pittsburgh (2006-07). The DMV native has also coached both high school and AAU basketball in the local area giving him deep recruiting connections.

“Greg has done a tremendous job for our program and is very deserving of this role,” said Willard. “He has the respect of our players and is well-known throughout the Maryland community and beyond.”

Manning has served in a number of roles during his five-year tenure in College Park and moves into the assistant coach position which opened when Grant Billmeier was named head coach at NJIT. The native of Alpharetta, GA, most recently served as the Director of Basketball Operations since April 2021. He began his time with the Terps as the program’s video coordinator from 2018-21. Additionally, he served as an interim assistant coach for much of the 2021-22 season. From 2013 to 2018, Manning was an assistant coach at Siena College under Jimmy Patsos.

“Charlie has worked with me for a number of years and has an excellent understanding for how to run the daily logistics,” said Willard. “He is incredibly hard working and focused on making sure we are prepared in all the different areas needed for our staff and players to be successful.”

Butler spent this past season as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations during his first year in College Park. This will be the ninth year for Butler to work alongside Willard in a full-time capacity after spending six seasons on his staff at Seton Hall as the Coordinator of Basketball Operations. He also spent two years prior to that role as the program’s video coordinator and four years as a team manager during his undergraduate career, including as head manager as a senior in 2014-15.
