COLLEGE PARK, Md. — When Maryland announced that it had hired Kevin Willard away from Seton Hall on March 21, 2022, it was expected the new head men’s basketball coach would get a reprieve his first year. After all, he had to acclimate himself to the current players, had little time to recruit new players, and basically had to piece together a team on the fly.

But that was never Willard’s mindset, and he’d never set his expectations so low.
