After back-to-back losses to Penn State and Ohio State in early February, Maryland sat at 4-9 in conference play and was in real danger of falling into the bottom third of the league and out of the NCAA tournament conversation altogether. The Terps (13-10, 7-9 Big Ten) had been competitive, as they’d been the majority of the season, but simply couldn’t establish enough consistency to break into the middle of the Big Ten pack.
